What is a blurb?

The blurb is the short text on the back of a book that entices the reader into making a purchase. If you think of a synopsis that you send to an agent or publisher, then shorten it to a few sentences, so the reader gets a feel for the book, but nothing is given away.

There are two outcomes when a reader reads the blurb. It will either:

Engage the reader to make a purchase

or

Fail to attract, forcing them to look at something else.

There’s no in between and you either get it right, or you don’t. That’s what it all boils down to.

Writing a succinct blurb for the back of your book can be more difficult than writing the book itself. How do you sum up a whole book in two or three paragraphs and making it interesting enough so your readers will buy it?

Then, there’s the additional pressure of not giving too much away. You don’t want your readers saying ‘who’s the killer? oh it says on the back that it’s Bob.’
