Helping to make your writing right
Everyone make mistakes when writing and we’ve all read a book that has contained a few spelling errors. It’s natural and nothing to do with your ability to write or understanding the English language. If you’ve written an 80,000 novel, there’s likely to be quite a few errors dotted throughout the pages, regardless of how many times you’ve read through it. And to catch those remaining few, it’s always advisable to hire a proofreader.
Why proofreading is essential
As a writer, you want to make sure your audience is fascinated by the story, rather than pointing out errors. Proofreading is the final stage before publication so you need to get it right the first time.
Readers don’t want to see mistakes
If you read a piece of text that is littered with mistakes, the chances are you won’t read to the end. So don’t ask your readers to do the same.
Errors detract from the story
A book with many errors will detract from the story. Readers will become fascinated by basic errors and forget what the aim of the book is. It will then be reflected in any reviews.
They also affect your credibility as a writer
Bad reviews will affect your credibility as a writer. If you want to be taken seriously, errors must be minimal at best. not strewn across the entire novel
Any future books will go unsold
If you don’t heed the warnings from your other, error-strewn book, it is highly unlikely any further work will gain high sales. They’ve been through it once already!

A few tips on proofreading
You can absolutley do this yourself, and if you would prefer not to pass this onto anyone else, here’s a few tips to help you.
Read it aloud
Reading aloud helps identify little flaws that reading quietly doesn’t spot. You can tell if something reads well, and prticularly helps with punctuation.
When proofreading, it is vital to ignore the story and concentrate on the words. Reading line-by-line and word-by-word will help to identify spelling and punctuation errors quickly.
List your common errors
If you notice you’re making the same mistakes, take a note of them. This will help you to identify these issues later in the story and in future writing. If you know your weakness, it will make you a better writer.
Remember – this isn’t an edit
When proofreading, remember that you’re not editing. You should have already completed the editing stage, so if you find yourself editing, stop proofreading and edit instead.
